Jul 31, 2012 12:02:22 : Craigslist sends C&D to jaxed.com (again!)
By: jaxed
This is going to sound familiar.

On July 30, 2012, jaxed.com was presented with a "CEASE AND DESIST UNLAWFUL MISUSE OF CRAIGSLIST" from attorneys representing Craigslist. In the C&D, jaxed.com was cited for violating the Craigslist Terms of Use (TOU). Cragislist has demanded that jaxed.com remove all Craigslist listing titles, and cease to index Craigslist listings in the future.

This is the second C&D that Craigslist has sent to jaxed.com. The first one was in August of 2011. The difference this time? jaxed.com is now sourcing all of it's Craigslist listings from a 3rd party API developed by 3Taps. As you may be aware, Craigslist has filed a lawsuit against 3Taps and Padmapper for violating Craigslist's TOU.

At this time, jaxed.com will comply with the C&D. Like last time, jaxed.com will attempt to open a line of communication with Craigslist to see if there is any sort of license or deal that can be worked out so that we can continue to operate with Craigslist listings in some way, shape, or form.

Sorry folks.

Here we go again. Can't they just work with jaxed instead of against?

Appreciate your efforts on our behalf. Jaxed is doing a service that helps Craigslist and us and one Craigslist won't provide. All Craigslist is doing is creating ill will for themselves.

The message CL isn't getting is that people like me will stop accessing many CL sites that aren't in our immediate vicinity since it is so tedious to search every region in an area for goods and services that are of interest to us. That means a lot less hits for CL. Jaxed facilitates a hobby of mine that leads to many daily CL hits. When CL takes Jaxed down, I don't mess with CL. Better sites will pop-up to replace CL as CL changes its open philosophy that made it so popular in the first place. RIP CL!

Craigslist has way too much crap to weed through and it is such a scam enabler that it isn't worth using any more. Thanks for attempting to provide a functional and very useful service. It is too bad CL management isn't bright enough to see that JAXED actually makes Craigslist usable. Craigslist should be trying to buy you out.

I have been a follower of Jaxed for a long time. It is a pity that CL will not cooperate. I am finding that your site is no longer useful and I'm getting more info from Search Tempest.
Hope you get it back.

So that's why there are so many less postings! Damn, finding a classic car is going to be so much harder now. Instead of searching everywhere, I'll now have to search individual cities. What a waste of time that's going to be.
Looks like I'll have to find another website that compiles CL search results, anybody know some good cites? I'll come back to Jaxed if CL comes back, but who knows how long that'll take, if at all.

guys autotempest.com still works and its good

Aug 19, 2012 16:29:27 : Comment by: Dave Jenkins
WTF. How come Search Tempest doesn't get the same C&D BS? I hate using their site since it takes so long to open each window, plus they have those stupid ads. Oh well, I'll wait until you find a work around again! good luck.

Aug 19, 2012 21:43:08 : Comment by: mm
Wow they just dont get it! They are so busy trying to stop users from being able to search nationally that they dont notice in alot of areas 85% of auto listings are scams that are easily identifiable. Why dont you stupid CL staff put your iphones and ipods down and do something about the stuff thatreally matters

Aug 21, 2012 21:07:33 : Comment by: FY
Not again! CL get you act together, it works for everyone, duh, Can't we all just get along?

Aug 22, 2012 17:23:50 : Comment by: Curt
Craigslist should think about wining and not fighting.

Your site allows access to Craigslist nationally. Without your site I dont review Craigslist because the repetitive searches (by city or region) is too burdensome. Your site also allows exposure to listings on other sites. You provide a credible and honorable service. Craigslist should be asking for a relationship with you. It would be a win-win and expose the Craigslist advertiser to a greater audience.

Perhaps the Craigslist advertisement can tag along with the CL listing if it doesnt already.

I will wait for your return and I will not use Craigslist until you are back. I will ask "my friends" to do the same and to pass the word to their friends.

Can you please continue to composite listings from other sources excluding Craigslist? If so your effort will be appreciated.

Best wishes.

Don't you all realize... ebay which owns part of Craigslist wants Craigslist to be user-unfriendly because it competes with ebays very expensive and very lucrative national listings! So they keep Craigslist too cumbersome to be meaningful for anything but a single local search! Shame on ebay for their virtual monopoly!

I love Jaxed.com and starting to hate Craigslist. How can CL be against finding stuff?

From a legal standpoint, does't google do the same thing jaxed does? Have they tried to shut down google?

How come CL is not able to make as good and usefull page as Jaxed.com did?
Hey CL guys, wake up and think little bit what you doing. It is very simple.Just go together!

Have you considered reconceptualizing Jaxed/Mash as an agent or daemon that each of us could pay to use individually ?

Sep 07, 2012 20:54:22 : Comment by: Mike
I live in the NE and it is very hard to get rust-free, used autombiles up here. I recently purchased a vehicle in Raleigh NC and drove it back up here. I would not have found that car without jaxed.com

This is familiar territory - I also noticed Craigslist has adopted the thumbnail feature surprisingly similar to 3tap and some other sites kicked to the curb by the CL attorneys. The stance they have taken on this is ridiculous - even though they understand that all the sites redistributing their ads helped make them what they are, they have chosen to pick on the little guy. What a Graceful thank you from Craigslist.

What if every site and search engine stopped indexing Craigslist today as they have asked you to do...?

Seems like they would notice that drop in traffic...

This is very sad, I just found this site and now it's not working like it was, come on craigslist make a deal here.

In Google search bar, type e.g.:
"1967 Ford Mustang" site:craigslist.org

Then om the left bar, go to more search tools and select e.g. "Last Week"

Does this mean that Jexed will be allowed to show CL postings again? I like the format you guys use SO much better than any other I have found

Craigslist will never allow a mash site. It is owned by Ebay so having a national site search is in direct competition with Ebay and it's money making machine. Time for a new list

Oct 16, 2012 17:30:06 : Comment by: Tom
I think CL has missed an oportunity, a seller on CL would be happier to know that their listing is being seen by people all over the world instead of just in a particular region. I don't understand the reasoning, this does nothing to the idea of buy locally as opposed to the chains ie. Walmart etc.
The people buying here are not Ebay buyers if we wanted Ebay we would look on Ebay. JM viewership must be way down, which is too bad because it was a great site;(

Oct 21, 2012 04:34:49 : Comment by: Michael
eBay is shifting its focus to becoming an online market place for out right purchases and is moving away from the auction format...

I don't understand why someone doesn't just tell CL to jump in the lake, all they do is bully other websites around and nothing has even been taken to court until the recent 3Tap suit...will be interesting to see the outcome, 3Tap has counter sued CL for anti-trust among other things. Remember, Microsoft tried this crap with PC's and didn't win, why does CL think it owns the internet?

Oct 23, 2012 20:37:33 : Comment by: rc
I think that Craigslsit is doing the right thing to keep others from using the listed material from the CL site. I list several ads on CL and one of my pet peeves is the fact that some how there are many people harvesting for email address, scamming and spamming to listed ads. It affects all of us and makes for a bad experience to simply list an ad. If the On-line sites could stop these people from doing that, then I would say ok..everybody share. The problem is that this sharing places listers at risk without having any recourse to stop these violaters.

Are Public Facts Public Property?
Craigslist vs. 3taps / Padmapper

Putting all distractions aside, a central issue in Craigslist vs. 3taps/Padmapper is whether a company can put data into the public domain and at the same time complain when it doesn't like the consequences. Craigslist chose to make its user data available for indexing by search engines, which it does to drive traffic to its website. But making this data available to search engines makes it available to those who use the search engines, which, it turns out, Craigslist does not like. But can it have its cake and eat it too?
Here is what is happening: 3taps sources exchange data from the public internet which has already been voluntarily made available by Craigslist to search engines. 3taps does not need to scrape or even visit Craigslist because the data is already available throughout the public internet via search. 3taps indexes that data and makes it possible for transformative innovators like PadMapper to display the same facts in new and novel ways that benefit the market.
Despite having put this data out to the public by offering it wholesale for indexing by search engines and other internet users, Craigslist attempts at the same time to protect its market position by asserting the protection of an unlikely - and ultimately inapplicable - legal doctrine, namely, the copyright laws. But what worked for the record labels will not work for Craigslist. The fact that someone is selling a 2004 Honda w/AC for $2300 OBO is just that - a fact, not a symphony, and CL's terms of use notwithstanding, the seller never intended any different; all the seller wanted was a buyer. CL's TOU does not create a copyrighted work where none otherwise existed, and even if it had, the provision of the data for indexing created an implied license. Passing along that data is clearly fair use, and clearly was intended by - and in the best interest of - the author.
This is especially clear when one looks at what Padmapper actually does. What is PadMapper doing that oversteps the portrayal of facts and strays into the dangerous territory of copying, without permission, someone's creative expression? Price? Location? Or maybe the count of bathrooms is the trigger for crossing the line from factual description to truly creative expression in the minds of the plaintiff?
These are not creative expressions any more than phone numbers in a phone book are a creative expression. The Supreme Court has spoken on this point. What part of a phone number can you leave out to protect its creative expression before what remains becomes a non-fact - i.e. a wrong number? We ask the same question of exchange postings as regards price, quantity, location, etc.
No Terms of Use can ride roughshod over the fact that there is no copyright in facts. PadMapper's use of exchange posting is not infringing use. It is fair use or free (as in freedom) use of public facts.

Don't know why Jaxed has dropped Craigslist ads when other sites continue to offer them.

Don't know if these sites were served cease and desist orders from Craigslist via their attorneys or simply made the decision to ignore the order.

Jaxed! Where are you?!

Using jaxed.com was the best way to go through Craigslist without the hassle of looking through each city individually (That Takes Too Long). It was an easier search the way jaxed incorporated the two together. Now it takes me forever to find rare items and things of that jaxed made so easy to find! I believe that a healthy percentage of adds that we're posted in Craigslist were recognized and sold through jaxed, which didn't affect Craigslist in a negative way at all! Which turned and promoted better use of Craigslist with the help of jaxed!!!!!! Work something out so a frequent user, like myself doesn't have to look through every state and city for a specific item (which takes forever) that jaxed made so easy to find using jaxed (a help mate to Craigslist).

Imagine that!

Craigslist - the all-time champion of Misuse of the Internet - has the balls to complain about how someone uses their system!

Maybe if they cleaned their own house once in a while and provided some genuine customer service, things might improve.

Jesus, what hippocrites!

SOLUTION - This is how I mine Craigslist. It might work for others.

I did an initial search on ALL the Craigslist sites I wanted with a tight search parameter. On the results page I set up the RSS feed. This works on some sites, but not all (i.e. Florida cities turn RSS off.).

For those I set up an individual link to the final result page. When I go to the link in the future it give me current results. I bulk load those links.

If I want to scrape emails I use another program using all the links to ad pages collected. If you're going to bulk email (more than 10) make sure you send no more than 10 per hour AND try to make them a little different in content or Craigslist will block all future emails from your ISP address.

Craigslist is such a pain to use without Jaxed. One would think that a site that claims to help people sell items would keep all options open. I guess they have some little man complex at Craigslist or a dictator wantabe!

I was using jaxed to watch a bunch of local cl sites to see if i could find someone listing my stolen guitars, thanks craigslist for making that impossible

Craigslist owners are responsible for letting prostitutes and killers on their site but they want to stop jaxed and others from accessing their nationwide listings. I'm with everyone else that is boycotting Craigslist. It's too cumbersome and time consuming to try and search the nationwide Craigslist offerings. Craigslist should work with other sites. I haven't used Craigs in a year since jaxed and searchtempest came out.

beware the people listing a Ducati GT for $3490
This bike if it actually existed would be $10,000 range. These people run a "service" purporing to safeguard your money, but want a 50% deposit for something that doesn,t exist!
