Aug 31, 2011 01:34:13 : More on Craigslist
By: jaXed
THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT! The sheer volume of positive email and comments we have received after posting about the "CEASE AND DESIST UNLAWFUL MISUSE OF CRAIGSLIST" has been phenomenal. We have read each and every comment, email, Facebook, and tweet sent our way.

The whole Craigslist thing is a downer, we know. When it comes down to it, the "Craigslist way" is not compatible with our site. It's not compatible with the internet, really. If you look on just about every Craigslist listing page, and elsewhere on Craigslist, you see the following words:
DEAL LOCALLY WITH FOLKS YOU CAN MEET IN PERSON - follow this one rule and avoid 99% of scam attempts on craigslist.
Craigslist is about being local. Craigslist wants nothing to do with any sort of nationwide search and they don't want anybody else doing it for them. We really don't think this has anything to do with eBay owning part of Craigslist. It has to do with the idea of the "Craigslist way" of dealing locally.

In our opinion, dealing locally is great for buying baby clothes and finding a date for Friday night, but it's not that great for selling a classic car, a yacht, or a vintage bicycle -- items that might take a special kind of buyer that doesn't exist locally.

Basically, long story short, we are as frustrated as you are! All we can do at this point is continue to build on this site and add more sources - perhaps even obscure sources - so that you can find what you are looking for. And we will.

Keep up the good hard work and leave Craigslist behind. If they do not want to sell nation wide then the people selling products nation wide will find someone that does. If they want to sell baby diapers, then good for them. Rock on Jaxed!

The CL debacle is in the past, time to move on! Could you publish a list of the sites Jaxed Mash will cover going forward. I noticed you mentioned vintage bicycles; the market would reward a non-eBay nationwide venue for the buying and selling of bicycles and bicycle parts (vintage and modern).

I am sure you know what to do with it. Your idea is helpful and I use it every day. I don't understand why is so wrong to have the possibility searching nationwide.... !!!!! Thanks

I can search still search CL nationwide, but the normal search engine doesn't organize items chronologically and with pics and it may have something more relevant on page 5, and all things irrelevant in between. Also, I'd make the argument that there could be 10 or 15 craigslist sites that are driveable if you live in a metropolitan area. Im in DC - I often to to NYC, baltimore or Philly to visit. There are countless sites that are not in metro areas that are within an easy hour's drive. It would take too much time to go to EACH site. Also, even though I search nationwide, I'd NEVER buy something from someone random, without seeing it. I know people in different parts of the country who could go pick it up. Or its a good comparative tool to see what a particular item is going for. Sometimes there isn't enough of that item in your area to establish a reasonable price for a used item. CL is shooting itself in the foot on this one.

Aug 31, 2011 08:07:42 : Comment by: Steve
Do your own classified site. Fill the void craigslist insists on leaving. Make sure you include a distance filter. GO FOR IT!!

Aug 31, 2011 08:21:43 : Comment by: Tim
I think you are naive to think this doesn't have anything to do with EBAY greed..... Craigslist provides a GREAT service to folks who want to buy and sell locally. These folks probably never even have heard of Jaxed Mash...because they do exactly that...they buy local. So why limit people who want to buy Nationally?? We know the risks.... if we want to stay local, we have that option. But why limit a national search?? They want to limit national searches because it cuts into EBAYs profits..... pure and simple. Craig Newmark fell for corporate greed. I don't blame him for it... but he should stop holding himself out as this person who wants to keep the internet open and free.... hypocritical when he takes choices away from people for no good reason other than greed and wanting to limit competition.

Through Jaxed Mash I have bought a GTI in Virginia, an A6 in Texas, a ski Nautique in Michigan and various parts for an early bug- all within the past year. I have never found a more useful site and often thought that Craigslist should be paying you for the service you provide

Aug 31, 2011 08:28:20 : Comment by: Tim
One more comment to add to my one previously. I have bought many, many items from Craigslist ads across the US via Jaxed Mash over the last year or two. Never once, ...not ONCE did I EVER get a bad comment or refusal from the seller to work with me on the purchase because I wasn't local... just the contrary... most of them were so happy to make the sale, they assisted me in every way possible to accommodate for the distance...... People have choice....they can say no to a long distance sale if they want to.....but I have NEVER been scolded by a Craigslist seller because I was "bothering them" by not being local......

It's ridiculous that CL would impose such a restriction as 'buy locally' when you can search any CraigsList in the world from your own home! It has nothing to do with CL's 'local' policy and everything to do with control. It's time someone started a global CL type of site that is modeled after the simplicity of CL yet allows sites like jaxed.com to access there data.
Don't stop. I love jaxed.com and will continue to use it for my searches for that mighty elusive perfect item.

I'm fairly confident eBay is behind this action by CL. eBay bought CL to stop CL from becoming a competitive threat to CL. eBay preserves its national turf by keeping CL local and user unfriendly. jaxed changed all this by making CL both national and user friendly. Quite honestly, I see eBay's point. I'm a vintage motorcyclee collector. Before jaxed, I did 90% of my business on eBay, with only about 10% on CL. After jaxed, that ratio has reversed - I deal almost exclusively on CL. Some smart antitrust/class action lawyer should turn this into something big vs. eBay.

Sorry to to see it come to this. It was a perfect solution for national searches. Hope CL sees the light and changes their feeble minds. Many local sellers won't make a sale and will never know enough to be outraged. This has corporate bulls**t written all over it!

if they think people are only searching and buying local the people at craigslist are crazy. Plus they are doing thier customers a diservice by limiting buyers locally. I have bought 5 cars off craigslist that I would not have found if it had not been for jaxed. All were over 500 miles away.

Of course I am sure someone has thought about running this site from an overseas server? Would that not basically get around the US lawyers commanding you to stop? Somewhere they don't have to follow the commands of US courts and such would surely be a good place to look.

Sep 01, 2011 06:36:10 : Comment by: Bill Johnson
You guys already have great search algorithms and crawlers how hard can it be to add the ability to post an ad on Jaxed. i agree with earlier posts. I have bought two cars via Jaxed that I would not have found on the "local" craigslist. I was looking for a couple other items when Craigslist cease and desist order came thru. I have not been back to craigslist since, not because the ads aren't there i am not going to go looking thru 100's of cities to find the item. Come on jaxed give us an advertising platform and go compete with CL...while pulling in all the other sites you give us.

Thanks for all our efforts

Sep 01, 2011 08:24:32 : Comment by: D Jones
I bought so much stuff from craigslist due to the fact that I could search surrounding areas through your site. I don't think any of the folks I bought from cared that I was coming from 40 miles away! Too bad for Craigslist. They are the real losers. I really think you found the weakness in their business model.

Sep 01, 2011 09:29:20 : Comment by: jim
have you considered hosting the site in a foreign country to get around craigslist's order?

Sep 01, 2011 10:18:29 : Comment by: saynotoebay
I am sorry that you are not fighting or providing other options to pull in CL listings... ebay gets what it wants now because without the CL listings, there just aren't enough people posting on alternative sites to make the jaxed useful without CL. ebay figures this will force national searches to ebay. It just seems that there has to be an antitrust case here, where ebay controls probably well over 50% of the national classified market and is maintaining its stranglehold not through a great product or competitive pricing (we all know their high fees!) but through buying out or othewise strangling its competitors! All consumers -- buyers and sellers -- are the losers. The alternative sites aren't national or well known enough to provide meaningful alternatives to the number of buyers and sellers on CL and ebay.

Sep 01, 2011 11:02:03 : Comment by: Mr. Spock
@saynotoebay

YOu made good point. When we learn this C&D and ebay/CL relationship, we were disappointed, more disappointed about C&D tho. U r right, not a lot of pple post their ads on alternative sites and we hope that will change. To us, CL is just a big fat monopoly in the classifieds business. and to order JAXED to kill it search engine is even more evil. We tried other alternative site before, like backpage, and they do not offer the ez write up steps to list in multiple cities, search by the whole damn country or state as loudheart does. JAXED helped us to do business with customers across the county cuz our customers find our ads thru JAXED and contact us. Now that JAXED asked to kill search for CL, we are expeecting a drop in business. We are planning to move ads to loudheart since they have the search tool to look us up nation wide. We are informing our customers to look us there for used cars. multiple listings with loudheart is hella ez. give it 3 zip code and 3 categories and up your ads in 3 different places. No need for copy and paste crap. If CL wants to be "local", then FINE. loudheart will then be nation and local at same time.

I believe there are several valid points raised in these posts concerning E-Bay and it's ownership / influence in Craigs List. They are abusing their market status to exert undue influence and control over a free market environment. They bought into Craigs List to control it administratively by limiting market exposures and they control you (JAX) with their extensive financial resources under threats of legal actions. THESE ARE ANTI-TRUST BEHAVIORS THAT SHOULD EXAMINED BY THE SECURITY AND EXCHANGE COMMISSION.

Sep 01, 2011 11:23:07 : Comment by: dan larson
Making business sense out of the whole ebay/craigslist/kijiji relationship eludes me. I do, however, have a sense of loyalty and appreciation for any entity that provides a life enhancing service for free. That still means CL(regardless of the puppetmaster theories),and most certainly Jaxed. Can the loyalty and appreciation of Jaxed users be applied to a new form of classified that competes with ebay? I keep coming back here hoping there's something to be done that makes the CL stunt look just like Monster Cable. If that doesn't happen, I would gladly shift my commercial business from ebay to Jaxed, just to support the attitude that brought the site into being in the first place. Any thoughts on a flat rate Jaxed listing fee? Count Me In!

Sep 01, 2011 15:32:39 : Comment by: Lihplom
Don't Stop. Issueing a C&D order from a public site is unenforceable. Put Jaxed into an LLC with no assets, then just keep going. Even if eBay sues, there's nothing to sue for. Give me two months and we could off shore this puppy. After all, my brother who's rather techy is moving to the Phillipines ;)

Please take a look at this, This may be what you are looking for. This is from, crazedlist.org.

Crazedlist allows you to search multiple craigslist.org sites at once. However in order to do so you must disable referrers in your web browser. Doing so prevents craigslist from knowing that you have come from this site and prevents them from blocking your results.

If you are unable to disable referrers you can try using the "Get Feeds" feature which allows you to get an OPML file of the RSS feeds for your search instead of performing a search in the web browser. To do this, close this pop up, fill out your search, then click "Get Feeds" instead of "Search".

Sorry, but as far as i know there is no way to disable referrers in Internet Explorer, so this site will not work for you.

Please try using Firefox instead.

NOTE: If you are forced by corporate IT jerks to used IE and can't load firefox on your machine, check out this write up on Lifehacker about surviving IT lockdown. It shows you how to install a portable firefox on a flash drive so you can use a real browser when the IT crowd has you in lockdown.

Please post if this would help. I do not use firefox but I believe that if this brought us back to full functionallity, we would all use it. Thanks again.

I used Jaxed to find parts for my old truck in different states. Many of the people I purchased from said it was too complex and expensive to sell on eBay so they gave up and put ads on Craigslist. Now some of these folks tell me they are POed cause people are not buying as much as before. Not many folks in their area want old truck parts. It's like trying to sell a snowmobile in South Florida.

I deal, collect, and trade antique tractor stuff. Guess I will cease and desist from buying off of craigs list. I agree with you on one thing. CRAIGS LIST IS OBSOLETE. It works like a bulliten board form the early 90's. Without your site craigs list will be left to hooking up crack heads, hookers, and other people who are looking to meet up in the restroom at the rest stop. One nice thing about your site is that if acts as a better filter. At any rate they will remain as a tool to help law enforcement clean up this kind of stuff. If these people had any businesss sense they would be trying to buy your site or build a stronger business relationship. You add much needed functionality.

I will try to be brief. Thanks for reading all of these.

First, its nice that everyone keeps asking you to start a competitor to CL and Ebay, BUT, you and I both know that is a pipe dream. Not going to happen.

You have a short window in front of you while the audience that you built will still keep checking back here. Soon they will be gone and find a different meathod to search. They may not like it as well, but once they start they willl move on. So, it is time to take action while this window is open to you, or you will be starting over.

First, you got a suggestion letter. Not a court order. You do not have to comply. I have never seen a fine to anyone as a result of violation of CL terms. I have done some research and found nothing. So you are risking nothing by just moving forward. BUT, I feel sure you are not comfortable, or you would not have taken them down. Please see the post above about a method to block CL from seeing you, using Firefox. Please consider two things. Continuing on use this method, or immediately starting a new site that will incorporate this method.

I left another message on the other thread of one alternate method. I enjoy your site, it is by far the best searcher out there, without a doubt, but you will lose this audiance in the coming month to months.

Please take this weekend to decide on a plan of action. No action is an action in its self.

Please consider moving forward, I do not see that you are risking anything with the methods avalible and again, you have not recieved a court order to stop, just a suggestion from a lawyer. That cost them a hundred bucks to have sent to you.

Let get back to business. Thanks agian for reading all of these.

@ Whats a collector to do

I also have to agree with you. The first day or two I was drawn back to JAXED every 10 mins to see what the next person had written and to see if there was any response from JAXED. I now find my self coming back here maybe once a day, and that is only to read the postings. Much like Craigslook (now Claz) before JAXED, once the CL functionality was stripped it really did not servce any purpose for me and I moved on. JAXED still has a captive audience but they will not be captive for long.

Lets face reality, I think for a long time coming CL is going to be the one and only classified ad site the majority will use. It has taken them 16 years to get to the point they are at now and no start-up is going to knock them over in the next 16 years.

Having the CL functionality aids my business of finding and buying classic cars from all across the country for restoration. The cars I buy are usually overlooked and not worth putting on eBay or other high dollar sites, but I put money in peoples pockets and (hopefully) when I am done do the same to my own. Can I do this elsewhere? Sure, but like has already been mentioned, JAXED was simply the best there was for CL searches.

Further more, I sell parts to classic cars and advertise these on CL. JAXED also bought ME customers.

Without a court order I say put the CL searches back in place. If you get a court order then comply, end of story.

Alternately, go offshore, disable referrers, whatever you need to cya but give us CL searching back. At the same time use a Registrar for your domain services and get your contact information OUT OF WHOIS. If you had been listed anonymously CL would have needed a court order to get your information from the registrar to even send you a C&D, and they would not have been able to get one.

Heck, I would even buy the mash-up from you so I can run it locally, and have even thought of contacting off shore (aka India) web developers to put together something similar.

The simple fact of the matter is that jaXed was providing a better search through Craigslist than Craigslist itself was. On Craigslist you can't narrow down the brand of the motorcycle you want. You can't change the parameters so easily. The postings are text-only. You have to open them in order to see what the hell the bike looks like. And nine times out of ten it's a fucking dirtbike. JaXed gave you a preview right there on the sidebar letting you know what the bike looked like before you even saw its name.

Craiglist, get your SHIT together.

i do not understand the purpose for the cease-and-desist order. if a classified website's goal is to attract traffic and interest, jaxed is a perfect portal. if they are concerned with local business, jaxed is a great way to quickly compare neighboring cities' prices and availabilities. if craigslist is worried about scams and safety, they were less worried about assault and murder when their prostitiution ads ran in plain sight.

"Wanted to send you an email saying how disappointed I was in your Cease and Desist order given to jaXed.
Not the best name...but I found jaXed to be a most useful search tool for research and finding deals on craig list. I was and have been using it regularly to find my "next motorcycle".
I have used Craig's list to buy and sell many items through the years.

I am in Massachusetts, so Jaxes' "New England" search feature was most useful....it is laborious for me to search MA, NH, VT, CT, RI, ME...and even NY...all states that I would consider "local" for purchasing a motorcycle. Now just in MA. I have to search 3 craigslists: Western, Worcester, and Boston.

Please reconsider this and allow Jaxed to include craigs listings."

Is everyone blind?????????? Jaxed has clearly been paid by Craigslist/Ebay to play along with this story. I mean really, going from exploitng the holes in a monopolistic system, to defending the same system??? Can anyone not smell bullshit? No anarchist fight? All of this has been scripted by Craigslist, it reeks of corporate wordsmithing, so un-Jaxed. www.jaxed-sellout.com

Dear God. Yes, it's "corporate wordsmithing". What an idiot. How do some people even afford food?

When I posted at Barthmobile.com about the demise of the Jaxed search engine, a member responded that he uses SearchTempest. How can they continue to offer national CL search? Regardless, their for sale items should be incorporated in Jaxed.

I hate C&d. CL shut down craiglook and now this site. arrrrgh. Somebody needs to confronts CL eBay monopoly. This cannot wait any longer. No nation search is $&@! CL. I do agree with Spock from the other post that loudheart.com is way better than CL. Their search tool makes sense that CL should have done a long time ago. The people over at loudheart.com that create a classifieds that CL lack rockssss. CL has only 30 staffs and annual income is over $1 millions and they can't come up with a better site than loudheart.com. What a shame and cheap owners CL has become. Why can't they use that portion of the profits they made and create a nation search and build a customer services department. With annual profit of $1M and they can't do that is @$&"; is beyond me. They had to threaten jaXed and cannot innovate. loudheart.com, I love the name and hope you succeed.

You guys keep praising Loudheart, but it has no listings...like I mentioned before CL took 16 years to get where it is at, it is not going to be toppled by anyone. I hate to think that JAXED has been paid off by CL but I am confused as to why they bowed out so quickly and have not responded to any more comments...

Leave CL in the past & move on, there's many option out there, all we have to do bring them in. I'm pretty sure there's a lot of local ads that we can bring them in & help each other out. Let me start with this one wantaddigest. com

Ok there you go.

"jaXedlist", yeah- why not? We'd all love to have you host a nationwide want ad. I'm willing to bet you're afraid we'd jam your server- there are so many of us that would rush to use your site!

Unbelievable. I rely on this board to find specific, collectible pieces. Now, I have to go to each city and search? I will just pass. Too bad for CG.

For those of you who are into smartphone and dying for Samsung Galaxy S2, I found this deal on loudheart thanks to Food Warrior. $150 pre order on Sprint. 4.5" screen, Android 2.3, 8 mega rear camera, 2 mega front, 1080 HD video recording. I luv this phone.

@kelly stevens
Thanks for agreeing with me. :) Need to correct u tho, it's $150 millions in revenue in 2007, not $1 million that CL generates. If Craig Newmark was to pay each of his 30 staffs equally like $200K a year and pay ebay 28% of the cut, he still have lod of $$ for that one year. I agree w/u that the guy is cheap not to put some extra dough into customer department.

This is a quote from Financials and ownership section:

Analysts and commentators have reported varying figures for its annual revenue, ranging from $10 million in 2004, $20 million in 2005, and $25 million in 2006 to possibly $150 million in 2007

The link to that quote is:

Old habit dies hard. If u not gonna start, u will never will. loudheart has no listing. sure. dunno what stoping ya from putting some listings over there just cuz it's a brand new. look it this way, if u want to deal locally, go to cl where it forces users to search 1 city at a time. If u want to deal nationally or locally, go with loudheart. imho, when I list something for sale, people can find it ez by using it search engine or just browse the entire USA. there's no idea to click from 1 city to the next and the next and so on to find what ya looking for. I think loudheart has the right tool for buyer and seller.

For example, I found that Galaxy S2 smartphone (which btw has not released to the public yet) deal by using loudheart search link and keyword "galaxy" and check where to search. *BAM* someone just posts the deal. That's awesome. Can't beat that.

My boss always say "maximum exposure" whenever we had meeting about how to get our business out there so that everyone knows about it. loudheart gives me that chance. luv it!

btw, I just placed my pre-order for that GALAXY S2 !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! thanks to Food Warrior over at loudheart.

No idea y I write so much today. Musta been that burrito I ate earlier. LOL

cya

hope every1 had a great weekend. Spock to enterprise, beam me up scotty! LOL

I personally don't see how CL can stop Jaxed from doing what it's doing. You are not altering any of their information, nor are you posting it to your website, you are merely LINKING TO IT, which as far as I know is not illegal nor an infringment of copywrite law. I don't think CL has a leg to stand on in court. I would continue to link to their PUBLIC LISTINGS and defy them to drag me into court and try to stop me, which they would not be able to do.

I bought lots of stuff from out of my area. Just a couple wk ago went 400 mi. to pick up an engine. Now limited selling and limited buying.

I can understand CL wanting to be "local" in some regards, but if I'm selling something, the more people who can find it the better. Now I'll go to other sites instead of CL.

I remember 10+ years ago when CL was new and about openness and being useful, now they've become big and corporate and out of touch in their mindset.

shure it does... it has evertything to do with ebay owning craigslist...look on your site now what do you see.... a whole lot of actions that they make money on... ebay wasnt making a dime when you guys promoted craigslist.... now they will make more while forcing you to "advertize" ebay actions

I never posted on my local CL with the expectation that jaxed would nationalize my reach. In fact, I never did sell anything on CL that wasn't to a local buyer. I did, however, buy a lot of items from non-regional CL sellers that I got by using Jaxed.

Seems to me that if I could sell nationally, via jaxed, and receive nearly the same price I could have by auction on ebay yet avoid the seller's fees, etc then EBAY loses (and I win). EBAY just looking out for their long-term interests.

Too bad for me though, jaxed made it quite easy to find inexpensive and/or unique items.

Thank you Jaxed. Because of your site I was able to find a vintage school bus that I am restoring. It a shame that CL are being such assholes. If it hadn't been for your site compiling listing from around the country I would have never found it. The bus was located one state over, about 570 mile from I live. Good luck and keep up the good work. I have recommended you to numerous friends and will continue to do so.

Hi Jaxed team, to sad, I used your site from germany to search for item I want to buy. It's time to create craigslist 2.0! Take care.

So Sad! I found my hard to find Smokercraft boat 600 miles away through your site on the Portland, Oregon Craigslist. I would not have found "EXACTLY" what I wanted with out being able to research all other listings for these boats. I thank you for that!!!! Jaxed is a great tool and I will continue to use it in the future. Good Luck and I look forward to seeing what you are going to do next.

There is no reason you can't sell the craigslist search module as a program or an app for a smart phone.

Ebay will find a way to screw it up , they are so anal with all their rules and crap, I tried the other day to leave a feedback and it said that I wanted to say thanks and that my wife needed the sweeper bags badly,, they would not let me leave the comment because of the word 'badly" this is so unreal!!!! they are like communists, they want to tell you what to say and how to say it, ebay is going down the tubes, slowly but surely, they are not the great place to buy that they used to be. The really screwed up with the decision to not let sellers leave negative or neutral feedback,, they want everybody to be happy , happy happy, like in a perfect world, please dont let ebay buy part of jaxed!! please!!!

How is SearchTempest and CraigFind able to conute operations? Or is it just a matter of time. I think most of us have the need for global Craigslist searching.
