Aug 26, 2011 20:26:27 : Craigslist sends C&D to jaxed.com
By: jaXed
The jaXed Mash has been presented with a "CEASE AND DESIST UNLAWFUL MISUSE OF CRAIGSLIST" from attorneys representing Craigslist. In the C&D, The jaXed Mash was cited for violating the Craigslist Terms of Use. Cragislist has demanded that The jaXed Mash remove all Craigslist listing titles, and cease to index Craigslist listings in the future.

At this time, we are removing all Craigslist links from The jaXed Mash.

We know most of you come here specifically to search for stuff nationwide in the US and Canada. It is unfortunate that we will not be able to offer Craigslist as a source of data any longer.

The next few days and weeks we will be looking at merging new sources of data into The jaXed Mash. It makes sense to find smaller niche sites and forums and work with those sites to bring their listings to The jaXed Mash. If you know of any sites that you would like The jaXed Mash to index, drop us a line via Email, Facebook or Twitter (@jaxed).

It's unreal, I can't believe it, I was using your site to search sea kayaks in all USA and bought 5 of them even if I live in Montreal, It's a sad day. I'm wishing you all the best you do a great website.

Are the folks at craigslist crazy? Your site makes their listings more valuable to their users. Without jaxed mash; I would never have looked at many people's ads. Is their intention to REDUCE the views of their users ads?

This is (was) the best way to search Craigslist (if not the only way). Leave it to a lawyer to ruin something worthwhile. Thanks for the years of searching freely. (Did we move to China?)

maybe we should not post or buy anthing from craigslist.... hit them in the pocketbook

Aug 26, 2011 21:16:44 : Comment by: RonSk
I have left some very negative (but cordial) feedback with Craigslist. Sad that they limit a company from doing what they should have done themselves a long time ago. Thank you Jaxed for your service to those who want to do nationwide searches.

Aug 26, 2011 21:20:32 : Comment by: craig
"Unlawful misuse of craigslist"? Oh right, it's only for finding local hookers now.

Aug 26, 2011 21:22:56 : Comment by: UpCL
This is such a great tool.. what can CL be thinking? This is like Sears bolting the front doors closed on their stores.

Well, fine. We will find other places to sell items. The hell with CL.

BTW this is the 2nd site like this that I used to use which has been shut down. What a bunch off a$$es they are.

Aug 26, 2011 21:25:33 : Comment by: SayNotoCL
When CL shut down another national search site, somebody claimed that ebay bought part of CL... and a nationwide search on CL could threaten ebays huge and profitable auctions... let's hope another national engine opens up soon. Thanks for the site as long as it lasted.

Aug 26, 2011 21:26:33 : Comment by: steve
Time to abandon craigslist. Searching city by city is too much like work. Google search has nothing on Jaxed or the defunct Craiglook. May as well just watch ebay. Craigslist should be glad to have the help of such great search engines - free help. I stayed off craigslist for several months after craiglook was eviscerated.

Aug 26, 2011 21:32:34 : Comment by: DVine
Wait a minute - Ebay, kajiji, Craigslist - are ALL owned by ebay. Sounds like more Ebay manipulation to me. I regularly excluded the lousey, misleading ebay ads to search Craigslist. Thanks for providing a fabulous tool - the beta site is awesome! Keep trying to get Craigslist back!!!!!

Aug 26, 2011 21:32:58 : Comment by: SayNotoCL
Unfortunately the people who will be hurt are the sellers and buyers... having to search each individual CL is impossible. Many CL sales were through your national search engine.

i have recently tried using the jaXed web site and found i could at not do a search any longer through them for craigslist listings. i have sent several people to that site for just that purpose. if jaXed is not allowed to use craigslist then craigslist should come up with a way to do a search about the same way jaXed did. going from location to location is such a pain and all jaXed did was make it easy for the actual buying public to find what they are looking for. i hope that you find some way to be comparable to them or find some way to allow them to add craigslist back to the search. sincerely a very frequent craigslist user...........copy of email i sent to craigslist thank you jaXed for saving me an enormous amount of time just sorry that without craigslist i will not be using your site....

Aug 26, 2011 21:36:42 : Comment by: Rich
A sad sad day. This site saved me a lot of time and made purchases easier and more interesting. I really hope CL will rethink this and work something out. CL has hurt a great website (for now, hopefully).

Aug 26, 2011 21:39:55 : Comment by: Frank
My conclusion is this had something to do with Ebay ownership of CL. Jaxed Mash is a truly useful tool that tranformed craigslist from a local junk listing to an addictive shopping machine with national scope. Really sad. Searching city by city is just too impractical.

I too sent them a note to let them know they have done a serious injustice to their customers. You did a better jo of promoting their listings than they did!! Probably why they issued the order.

Disgusted but not surprised. Every site that has ever had CL pictures searches or CL cross country use has been stripped. I know many sellers who have quit because of the monopoly and intertwinings of ebay, paypal, cl etc etc. Thank you for the great site.

well, I had forgotten that both of my last two car purchases were completed because of Jaxed: both on craigslist - both vehicles were in areas I wouldn't have searched singularly. Never mind more than a dozen other cars we looked at in the process, mostly wouldn't have ever been looked at if we used plain crappy craigslist search.

Another loss to free enterprise. I finally find a good site to search for everything and save time. Now some corporate idiot decides to screw things up. This will definately hurt craigslist. Can Jaxed hook up with trader online? That would boost both parties traffic.

Sign of the times.. Leave it to big brass to take away a VERY beneficial site for both the craigslist site(s), and it's readers. jaXed is doing no harm here, just making life a little easier for hobbyists, and it's "cheap entertainment" for us poor folk. :-) It's not right to take away "win-win", now everyone loses, except CL's attorneys. Hopefully the staff at jaXed will stand their ground and fight this nonsense.

Aug 26, 2011 22:25:07 : Comment by: Capt. Kirk
It's time for a NEW national Want Ads website. Craigslist needs to be challenged. Ebay/Craigslist can't keep folks from negotiating deals nationwide. DEVELOPERS, ENTREPRENEURS and USERS , I'd like to see an Alternative to Craigslist. BUYSELLTRADE.com or something along that line. Is there any venture capitalist and coders reading this? You have a perfect opportunity to kickstart an alternative to CRAIGSLIST. Maybe The folks at Google or Facebook have some interest? Buying/selling/barter etc is just another form of "social networking" so why not? Sorry Ebay. You can't get a cut just because I want to conduct business with someone in a different state. Corporate greed may have killed the electric car, but hell if I'm going to let them determine who I buy my next set of speakers from.

Sad day when another group of Attorneys ruin something good. I would recommend if possible MASH create their own site for such things as boats, cars, and the likes that people search nationwide, hit Craigslist where it hurts, I would no longer need Craigslist. THANK YOU craigs for hurting the American Consumer especially in these difficult times.

I have found obscure parts for my Klein Quantum and also my beloved Eric Johnson guitar via MASH. It makes sense that CL would pull this stunt only from the perspective that they are now totally corporate and therefore mindless drones who only care about themselves, NOT YOU the consumer....

Aug 26, 2011 23:05:58 : Comment by: Tom
I'll bet the REAL reason here is that eBay (who owns CL), felt they were losing money to CL when on a national level (through Jaxed) and feel doing this will give eBay more traffic (and seller fees) now. It's always about money.

People: There will always be a way to search CL nationally. If not here, use Google. Don't reward eBay for this move by selling/buying there more. F eBay!

Aug 26, 2011 23:07:25 : Comment by: e-normousjohnson
Craigslist is free, this is free, google is free. Your not "selling" copyright, or infringing on the anyones names. I can make anything with anyones Trade Mark name and give it away, but it I sell it that's different. They can not sue for something that's free!

Craigslist has no idea how this site has helped their sellers. Personally I have purchased 4 items from Craigslist sellers in the past couple of months because this site makes it so much easier for searching. Instead of coming to some mutual agreement they serve papers? RIDICULOUS! Looks like I bought my last item from Craigslist.

Aug 26, 2011 23:32:11 : Comment by: Dan Schmidt, Indio, CA
Just sent to Craigslist:I have accessed Craigslist several times each day for the past several months. It has become a serious part of my routine. I recently (2 months ago) discovered Jaxed. With Jaxed I am quickly able to identify Craiglist sites across America that featured the specific items I was looking for (vises, anvils, antique/vintage tools). I have made numerous purchases from Craigslist sellers across the country because of Jaxed. I still refer to my two local sites -- Palm Springs and Inland Empire, California -- first and foremost, as buying "local" is often cheaper. I am at a loss as to how Craigslist is harmed by Jaxed. Its sellers certainly are not, nor are the buyers. The U.S. Postal Service is also picking up business shipping otherwise unsold items from sellers to buyers. I ask you to reexamine your Cease and Desist letter to Jaxed, and instead work out a way to include Jaxed into what you are doing. Craigslist is a phenomenal resource that has given so many individuals enormous power on the internet. Craigslist has smashed the print newspaper monopoly on classified advertising. Please don't let Craigslist become an ugly monopoly that stands in the way of the great economic engine it has inspired. Thank you for your thoughtful consideration. Dan Schmidt, Indio, California.

Aug 26, 2011 23:40:08 : Comment by: bw
It's really very simple why this has happened... Ebay purchased Craigslist for this exact reason. Think about it... Ebay is a nationwide selling tool (the largest in the world) specifically designed to reach the most buyers as possible, whether that be nationwide or worldwide. If Craigslist was/had a nationwide search and free, as it is now, there would be no need for Ebay. Ebay would be defunct within 1-2 yrs. This is Ebay's way of cornering the web marketplace. They do not want you searching nationally or even statewide cause then you'd stop using Ebay. F Egay and Craigslist, which was a non-profit site produced for no other reason than to be the anti-Ebay, to stick it to corporate greed and commissions. Sell outs. Another site needs to be created just like jaXed. Once that site gets a cease and desist, another jaXed start up should be created. And another, and another, and another, and another.......

Ladies & gentlemen,
I love Jaxed & this is no substitute but it works:
Go to Google, click on advanced search,
first line- 'all these words' -type in what you're looking for, last line- 'search within a site or domain' -type in Craigslist.org
Good luck!

Craigslist just made a huge blunder. Makes me think the same idiots are running it that ran ebay into the ground. When you live in a sparsely populated area like I do, the only way to find certain items is to be able to do a Jaxed Mash search.

My suggestion to the owners of Jaxed Mash is to show CL how stuoid they're being by starting an online listing service to compete head to head with CL.

I've been using jaxed for several months to find what I want nationally. It's quick, easy and a one stop shop. It only promoted a way to look at CL & eBay. Sorry it sent people to your sites in a convenient way, fools! You mean you don't want it convenient to go to your sites? CL is free to look and free to advertise. What gain do you have by making inconvenient to find your advertised items. CL make a good national search engine specific to CL... Wait... your trying to kill it in jaxed! It's 2011 and have not figured this out how to do a national search engine? Sure seems to be enough programmers out there to figure it out.

Again, what loss is there advertising to your sites. Jaxed was the best search out there by far.

I'm sure this is the work of evilBay's partial ownership of Craigslist. Why pay eBay a commission for every sale when jaxed connected buyers and sellers nationwide? I truly can't stand eBay because of their ridiculous percentages and moderate force of using paypal on every transaction. Very sad day for the internet market place. Thanks for many great nationwide purchases JaXed! Who will be the next Craigslist that won't sell out to eBay???

You people that use Paypal on your Craigs List are crazy to let them nick you for those percentages. If its a small amount insist on a postal money order then take that postal money order to a post office and cash it then send the product. If a person sends you a bogus postal order (something I've never seen) and the post office cashes it its not your problem, its theirs for cashing it,,,if they say its no good before you cash it then you don't send the item, If what you are selling is over the amount get multiple postal money orders. If its real big then set up a small nothing account with your bank, have the money wired in to the small nothing account and as soon as the money hits transfer the money out of that account to your regular account that way the bad guys don't have your regular account number and can't back the rest of you bucks out, they have to pay a wire transfer fee and wires are REAL money. If your bank won't cooperate on letting you open an account with $25.00 in it go to a credit union and tell your bank to stuff it. The banks are beginning to get greedy in this economy and what ever you do don't do business with Bank America.

I reviewed the ACCESS TO THE SERVICE provision on CL's page ([Linky to: www.craigslist.org]) and technically JAXED along with all the other services that have been sent C&D letters complied with this provision. Is there not some lawyer or law firm out there that can stand up to CL for violation of our rights to access information? Perhaps CL should concentrate a little more on the people who are spamming through CL, I got 20 spams through CL ad's today alone, rather than wasting their time harassing the people that actually create additional business for CL that otherwise is not available? I too buy and sell cars nationally and having a tool like JAXED made it possible to find cars quickly. It is not like I can not go to every CL site out there and search, and sometimes I do, but JAXED enabled me to be more efficient with my time which in turn let me search more and buy more. I say let them serve a C&D. Ignore it and keep up the great work. I would be surprised if they would take it further, and if so, how far a judge would let it go.

Seems like other sites that still allow you to do what JAXED was do have some type of disclaimer on the front page. JAXED must have been generating some traffic for CL to get pissy as others have been around since 2006...

There has to be some consumer protection law in some state here that has been violated. I say we all contact out AG's office and file a complaint against CL

In case you haven't noticed, I am pissed! JAXED should go offshore for your hosting, CL could not touch you then as they are claiming violation of terms of service which would only apply or be enforceable for a domestically (US based) service. C&D's and subpoenas are useless overseas or out of the USA

Jim, this is your buddy Spock. LOL

It's funny you guys have not discovered [Linky to: loudheart.com] yet. The developer at that site just answered your prayer bro. I published a couple of stuffs for sales over there. The site even support video ad. Kool! And region searches. I see a lot of buyers here, but for you sellers, you guys need to publish your ads over there so that I can search your things easy. I am into buy used cars, btw.

Aug 27, 2011 02:36:40 : Comment by: Texas
Man, that's really too bad. Loved this site just for that feature. Thanks for the great searches in the past! If anyone from CL is reading this, way to shoot yourself in the foot. Definitely not going to turn to Ebay. Time to hit the forums.

TO USED CAR SELLERS -

If you are selling your used cars - doesn't where you are located, can you guys put up your ads over at loudheart.com so that I can search for them. Before jaxed, I used to search city by city on craigslist for my boss. Man, that is a bitch. Now that jaxed got nixed too, I am sadden because my fuking job would be click-click-click and more clicks on CL. So, do me and the rest of used car buyers, post your used cars on [Linky to: www.loudheart.com] so that I can find you easily. I am looking for a '93 to '95 honda civic, 2001 honda cord, 2000 toyota runner.

Can you get around this technicallity by having all your listing titles start with a word which alters the Craigslist title yet doesn't cause confusion? As an example all search reseult could start or end with the word "Jaxed" then list the Craigslist title.... Jaxed VW betle 1994... At least this way they could not make the claim that you are using their Craigslist title???

It doesn't sound illegal to me. From the Craigslist Terms of Use:

craigslist permits you to display on your website, or create a hyperlink
on your website to, individual postings on the Service so long as such use
is for noncommercial and/or news reporting purposes only (e.g., for use in
personal web blogs or personal online media). If the total number of such
postings displayed or linked to on your website exceeds one hundred (100)
postings, your use will be presumed to be in violation of the TOU,
absent express permission granted by craigslist to do so. You may also
create a hyperlink to the home page of craigslist sites so long as the
link does not portray craigslist, its employees, or its affiliates in a
false, misleading, derogatory, or otherwise offensive matter.

Aug 27, 2011 09:21:35 : Comment by: Reality
Sorry guys but you are all off. If craigslist wanted you to be able to search their entire site at once it would be nothing for them to do it themselves. Obviously they do not want it and the reason is obvious. 99.9% of the ads are sold to people within 50 miles. If you are searching for every keyword you want for the entire country you are using a massive amount of their bandwidth that will not result in sales. On top of that there is the Craigslist scammers and people who make a hobby about hassling others over their prices, searching the whole thing just makes it easier on these people. Just use your local ads, chances are that's the only place you are going to buy something anyway.

Aug 27, 2011 09:31:40 : Comment by: Reality Sucks
@ Reality. You are off the mark. CL has become such a hassle to use because of all teh cities you must search in a state to find anything. Try finding a vehicle in FL or GA... it takes an hour to search EACH city. A real pain in the ass.

why on earth would Craigslist.com decide they wanted fewer people to use their site? It makes no sense. The majority of people use Craigslist.com to avoid eBay and Paypal. The fees have gotten so high on those two sites that you can't make any money unless you ship internationally. Then shipping kills you. I can't believe it. Someone start a petition so we can send all of this to Craigslist.com and not the folks we like in this whole deal. I'll be the first to sign it! Send it to cute_smile88@hotmail.com (long story). Just because an "ATTORNEY" sends such a notice doesn't mean squat, only a Judge's Order ( and a separate Order for each State may be needed ) has any weight at all. The "Attorneys" from Craigslist can only threaten to obtain such an Order if you don't agree, and I dare say they will have a hard time to convince any Judge as to their actual DAMAGES??!! Craigslsit is obviously Public information, and Jaxed simply compiles it, but it is before the public, so I don't see the infringement of anything or any rights.
The Craigslist "agreement" pertains to ad posters mostly I think, not to the subsequent use of public information. Attorneys are real good at writing threatening letters, not so good at actually prevailing on their threats, and I really do not see them prevailing or obtaining a Judges Order in this matter, and I believe their claim would be dismissed. Any decent attorney could defeat their claim and demands with a short Motion to Dismiss and some case law to back up the free use of public information. Maybe you could start a legal defense donation fund to help Jaxed defeat this nonsense, and $1 from each of us would amount to plenty. Judges want to know specifics, like what are the damages to a given Plaintiff? Do they have a claim that can survive challenge? If not, it will be dismissed. You should really get a couple consultations, I'm sure some attorneys ( I'm not one but have been in many cases ) using Jaxed may even offer to help defeat such nonsense or to confirm what I've stated above. or confirm Craigslist rights or lack of rights pertaining to this issue. Anyone out there an attorney wish to comment, and help Jaxed determine whether Craigslist "request" to cease and desist has any legal basis, or would it go nowhere if taken to Court?? THX!

I was using jaxed every day to *BUY* COMIC BOOK ORIGINAL ARTWORK (hand drawn black and white art used to produce comic books), 1970s CANDY WRAPPERS (which most folks throw out anyway, but I collect), and BC RICH GUNSLINGER GUITARS (a flashy electric guitar from the 1980s). I was buying each of these a few times a month...the sellers were happy to get my cash and I was happy to get the guitars, wrappers, and comic art...WHERE WAS THE HARM TO CRAIGSLIST?!?!?!? If anyone still has any of this stuff that wants to sell, I'm still at CRYHAVOK58@aol.com . Geez Craigslist, why don't you worry about all the hookers and sex website spammers on your website instead of hurting your buyers and sellers... :/

In this age of information CL is woefully behind on allowing nation-wide searches. Many of the people that are using a nation-wide search are looking for items too rare to find locally. Thus the need to expand their search. I mean really, how many original '67 Corvette carborators would you expect to be for sale in your local area? Nation-wide, probably more. Aside from that, I agree with Keith ^. Make CL make you stop.

This is for Fred:

What exactly do you think you've achieved? You have succeeded in significantly reducing the amount of net traffic to CL. Will this make CL more profitable? Are you proud of yourself now?

Every time you people do this, all it does it turn more of the population away from the business that you supposedly support. If you worked for me and pulled this kind of crap, I'd throw you out in 30 seconds.

You can convince yourself that you have "enforced CL's terms" but that will do you a whole lot of good when CL goes bankrupt. Good riddance to CL and idiots like you.

Hey, can you put a PDF up of the CL attorney correspondence so we can all read it? Might show the world what kind of boneheads the CL admin staff has become. Attorneys do not do anything without specific orders and being paid. Might be interesting to follow the trail on this one...

Craigslist says it opposes national and regional searches as a way to avoid scam transactions, they wan't local transactions in person. However, Craigslist has added more and more cities to their site. To the point that you have multiple cities close enough where people can still meet in person to conduct a transaction. Especially true for automobiles. So why they won't allow reigonal searches is not understood by me. Also, according to the Craigslist FAQ... Q: Is there a connection between craigslist and eBay?
A: eBay acquired 25% of the equity in craigslist from a former shareholder in august of 2004.

Hey, let's get a grip on our emotions. Yes, the CL policy makes no sense. Perhaps it has something to do with scammers + shipping (trying to keep things local)? Whatever the reason, I hope they reconsider. BTW, ebay owns 25% of CL (or did at one point). CL is still a great site. Where else can we post free ads that get results? Perhaps we can all help jaxed cause by contacting CL in a civil manner. Best regards to one and all.

Everybody please write CL a suggetion telling them how we all use this site with great success. It connects people across the country and enables a lot of us to buy things we sell on eBay or buy for our personal use. There is no abuse in a resource that helps CL users sell their goods. With enough of a voice we can change there minds. If anything I imagine this is going to effect Ebay sales negatively

Well, all of the commenters have pegged it dead-on. The thing to do now is email the Craigslist buffoons and apprise them of:
1. how much anger they've invoked in us and how much disdain we now have for Craigslist;
2. how much we used and relied upon Jaxed (a very valuable and truly beneficial web asset) as our primary search tool;
3. how ineffective the unwieldy CL format is, thus discouraging us from even attempting to use it;
4. consequently, how we now are resorting to search engines other than CL;
5. and thus, how much activity they've lost due to their self-defeating decision!!!
I would only hope by enlightening them we could appeal to them to reverse their stupid stance!!

Typical! Some TOOL has to justify his paycheck, so he dreams up the concept that buyers everywhere finding exactly what they want and buying it from some guy in Biscuitville USA, is somehow an evil plot by cyber creeps to alter reality.
Screw it, I find whatever I find. Craigslist wants to hide their seller's goods from me finding them, and buying from them?
Great concept! After all wouldn't want the locals to miss out on all the curb alerts in the "Free" stuff category!
As Bugs Bunny would say, "What a Maroon"

Add me to the list of disappointed *FORMER* CL users. Like so many others I found the MASH very good at aggregating and filtering the listings I was looking for. Also, like so many others I really am surprised that CL can't see the benefit of this type of service.

I don't know if anyone else has noticed, but it is also getting very difficult to post ads on CL any more. I had my account "ghosted" for unknown reasons where an ad for my motorcycle I've tried to post for a couple weeks simply never appeared in the searches and I found out the hard way. No warning, no alert saying I can't link to photos, or it was too wordy, or ??? Now CL will tell you "thanks, here's a link to your ad", but no one will ever see it and you have no recourse - it's just a guessing game.

Well, fvck CL. I've opened a free account with kijiji (eBay classifieds) and posted my ad there. It is sure to be seen by more people now and I'll probably find a buyer.

Go to hell CL - Long Live The MASH!

Isn't eBay Classifieds and Craigslist run by the same company eBay? All you going to do is get screwed by one twin sister to another. Smart thinking bro. Very smart.

I think JAXED should hire it own laywers and fire back at cl.

what i don't understand is that pple get hooked into one system and nver learn to get go. CL kills craigslook, jaxed, and who else is on it hit list.

CL is a bully and ebay is the same shit. time to dethrone them

Example of letter; "Dear Craigslist. Due to a C&D letter from Craigslist Aug 26, Jaxed Mash (www.jaxed.com) is no longer aloud to include Craigslist ads into their search. Jaxed Mash was the best search engine in the world to search across all Craigslist sites, as well as other classifieds sites as ebay, kijiji, etc. This was a huge benefit for us as users and potential buyers, as well for the classified owner at Craigslist, as a much larger audience was brought together. Please, reconsider this decision. The decision has created a lot of anger across USA, as well as the rest of the world. See some reactions here: [Linky to: www.jaxed.com]. Regards (your name)”

Jaxed,
Why don't you just start your own ad campaine with the same list that you have. You could be the "Facebook to Myspace", only be "Jaxed to Craigslist"... Set your site up like CL but a different and improved version. It would acually be less work on your part because you wouldn't need to gather the ads - they would come to you!

Do it before CL comes up with their own method!!!

I would love to see Jaxed become a starting point for people to list items, and I would support Jaxed and market them as much as possible. Reprehensible behavior Craigslist! Another similar "mashup" site (who will remain nameless to protect the innocent) seems to survive without assault from the overpaid, fairness-challenged Craigslist attorneys by only running with browsers which can disable referrers. Doing so prevents Craigslist from knowing that a search comes from the site and prevents them from blocking the results. Perhaps you could do something similar.

I have sent many people to jaxed because it was such a great search tool. So much for sharing what is basically public information with the public. It makes you wonder if we really do live in a free society. If they have had to shut down similar sites in the past maybe they should get the clue what we are looking for and provide it themselves. I personally don't use CL because it is such a pain to search. Now that I know that Ebay may be to blame for this latest censure I am considering "ceasing" usage. Get a clue people. Intimidation is a tool ebay has elevated in intensity year after year, carrying it to the point where sellers / buyers do not trust one another... far from the "community" that ebay claimed to be it's goal. They could well be the culprit behind the move. I do think it will backfire. If CL had the intention of replacing Jaxed service with one of their own, they should have gone that route and created a CL site-based national search feature. As it stands now, they are just shooting themselves, and their users, in the foot. As a result, all buyers and sellers suffer as things now stand.
I have purchased and sold many items ONLY due to the Jaxed service. As it stands now, the loss is indeed two steps backward.

eBay hopes to benefit by being the only viable national auction site... can anybody say 'restraint of trade monopolistic practice' of buying any viable competitors in order to secure your monopoly over on line sales? And at ebay's extortional pricing..

I have purchased several boats, and a couple of cars, after finding them on Craigslist via your site. Because I know exactly what I want and am willing to travel to get it, your site has made me a much more active buyer. I can assure you that I will by much less likely to purchase items from Craigslist if I can't easily search for what I want (not to mention my anger over their decision to close down this valuable service). I fail to understand a business model that would prevent potential customers from finding products they may want to purchase from (through) your site. Craigslist, you offer much less value to me today then you did previously.

Here is what I wrote to legal@craigslist.org and press@craigslist.org. Feel free to use the same:

I am writing in response to Craigslist’s recent action in furnishing a Cease and Desist letter to www.jaxed.com.

I have been a longtime user of craigslist as both a seller and buyer, and value the service it provides in both realms. I have also been a long time user of supplemental search sites such as www.jaxed.com and others in an effort to locate items across the country. As a result of these supplemental sites, I have in the past been able to locate and purchase a variety of items, for both personal and business purposes.

It is my hope that by writing to you, someone can provide an explanation of why sites such as www.jaxed.com are being intimidated and threatened without cause or justification. Craigslist itself allows me as a consumer to independently visit multiple national sites and search those sites for items I am looking for. However, this is a time consuming and cumbersome exercise and quite frankly I would prefer to spend my time doing other things. Sites such as www.jaxed.com did what craigslist has never done, and made it manageable and efficient to search multiple nationwide sites for items I am looking for. As a result, I am then able to click through to that site and initiate a transaction through the information that has been provided by craigslist. If nothing else, sites such as www.jaxed.com had driven me to use craigslist more often.

As a direct result of the intimidation and threats by Craigslist, my potential audience for buyers has been dramatically reduced, as have my opportunities to purchase items from afar. This has negatively affected not only my bottom line as a business, but also my ability as a consumer to spend money. By losing the ability to search and compare multiple listings, I have also lost my ability as a consumer to protect my choices.

It is ironic that an advanced Google search allows you to obtain similar results as were provided by www.jaxed.com and other sites that have been intimidated and threatened, but unfortunately Google, like craigslist, does not do a very good job of organizing and displaying the results. However, www.jaxed.com did do a good job.

It is also ironic that I get multiple emails per day from “Craigslist’s CEO” advising me to claim my free iPad, or numerous other spam, phishing or fraudulent emails that originate from postings on craigslist. I would assume those are all clear violations of Craigslist’s Terms of Use, did they all get Cease and Desist letters?

I have filed an official complaint with the Illinois Attorney General’s Office in the hope that if there is in fact justification for Craigslist’s action they will be made public, and if there is not, then they will be stopped.

I welcome your comments.

I'm not sure how CL has jurisdiction over what you do. In other words, you are not required to abide by terms and conditions, because you are not using the site, but merely pointing others to the site.

Also, to go to the site or to search on the site, one is not required to go through the terms and conditions to obtain information on the site, so there is no agreement to them. In other words, one is not required to "digitally sign" the terms of use to view information on the site. In many ways, you are providing news about a specific item of interest to a target audience.

There is some misinformation going on here regarding e bay owning CL. The truth is e bay owned 28 5 of shares of CL which they purchsed in 2004 and have since then tried to oust Directors of CL and take control of the company. In addition they have tried to launch similar websites both in Canada and in the USA. As of right now ebay still owns 28 % of CL shares after the law suit but does not have the right to appoint a director to CL's Board. it is interesteing to note that If e bay owns all of CL why they would not shut it down so that all buying and selling has to be conducted through e bay like prior to CL being launched. Secondly if e bay owned CL why are they trying to launch similar web sited like CL in canada and the USA ? ( Kijiji ) The idea is to get rid of CL for good so that all the free advertising will be gone and Ebay can start charging fees from everyone who uses Ebay and Kijiji. If e bay owned CL you will be paying for all the free ads right now. Here is the link to the recent law suit or google Ebay / Craigs list law suit and you will see the outcome of the case.

Lets be honest... this effectively kills Jaxed. I used the iphone app daily to search nationwide for pontiac parts. Let CL/Ebay go after Google.

I just had one other idea, which I have emailed to Craig Newmark... a simple radio button on the ad building page on CL that says "include in nationwide database".. that way people can opt in to be listed nationally, jaxed would just need to use these listings only (every ad would have "nationwide opt in" in the code....?

Well, this is a great opportunity for jaXed to start your own trader website (with national search ability). Hit CL where it hurts, in the pocket book. We need more competition out there and sites that benefit the people. Hopefully there is a venture capitalist that is a jaXed fan and sees this great opportunity. jaXed already has a following with thousands of users and has a name and I'm sure people would use this service. JAXED, not sure if you have gotten any legal advice but a C&D is only a request. It is not enforceable by itself, CL would need a court order to be able to enforce anything. I believe some of the other sites out there, Search Tempest for one, have also been served C&D's but chose to ignore it and there is nothing CL can do. It would be up to CL to take it to the next step, which they do not have legal justification to do, however they do not need to as most sites such as JAXED and CRAIGSLOOK pull the CL listings after getting the C&D. Remember, it is just a nasty way of CL saying "can you please stop do this" that has the intimidation and threat factor all over it. I say put the CL listings back up, wait for a court order and then if you get served with one, pull the listings. At that point you could represent yourself in any court in the country and the lawsuit would be dismissed because you complied by removing the listings. I still say that would not happen as was stated many times over, what are their (CL's) damages? None of us are required to acknowledge or sign terms of use on CL, even when you post an item for sale so they do not have a legal cause of action for anything. Oh, they would also have to file suit wherever your code resides on the net, so if that is not in California I doubt if they will be paying the lawyers to go travelling around the country for nothing.

Here is an article from June on CL:
WSB in Atlanta, Georgia is reporting that craigslist is sending cease and desist letters to various groups in Georgia to have them stop claiming that there is a link between child prostitution in Atlanta and craigslist. One of those letters has even been sent to the Governor of Georgia.

They’re sending these letters to agencies that assist in helping get child prostitutes off the streets and off of craigslist. Notice that craigslist didn’t say anything about closing down the adult services and casual encounters section of their site, the sections where child prostitution is facilitated.

Instead craigslist would rather bully some agencies that are actually doing some good.

Didn't it strike you odd how benevolent eBay was being when they let you use their site and search pages to place "free" classified ads within 100 miles? Because CL was already providing this service! They retained the "national' listings and their exorbetant fees. Now that Jaxed let you "nationalize" your searches of CL, eBay was slowly becoming irrelevant. So the eBay strings behind CL order this C&D. Did you ever wonder why your CL ads for cars would be "ghosted" if the same basic content was also on eBay in a national/fee-based ad? (Read: database cross-reference....) All the posts here are 100% accurate with both the eBay/CL relationship, and our level of frustration with this monopoly. Someone please offer a viable online classifieds alternative and put these greedy, immoral, and what will turn out to be not so intellegent losers out to pasture!!!

Aug 30, 2011 16:57:08 : Comment by: What is a collector to do?
Possible solution, and suggestions.

As a collector of several things, the shut down has really changed things for me.

The advice that the C@D is not a court order is correct. A court order is almost never accompanied with a claim of damages. Don’t panic. This is not the same a downloading music or movies.

I would like to offer two ideas.

First, keep this site open but, start a new sight. It will take them a long time to catch up to that sight and send any C@D's. Don’t push the envelope by making APPS for all the cell phones. It give you way too much visibility. Don’t shut this down for some time, do have a link to your alternate search engine.

Second, There are several small free programs available that search Craigslist and run a constant troll for specified items. Release a free program on Download.com that will run the search from our computers and do what you are currently doing in a web page. Then display results for each search in a separate tab. You can still have the program pull down banner advertisements when the program opens on the first screen before the search. They also frown on making money from Craigslist searches. But you will no long be hosting the search on your server. Once a person has downloaded your free program, it is out of your control when they are searching. I have seen a couple of cases like this and they have always favored the maker of the program. Its free and once released into the wild, it is almost impossible to pull it back. It will be shared freely and continue even if you do not update it. Do not include any ability to post adds or act as a BOT making searches every half hour for selected items. This is a major mistake.

I believe that either of these are viable options. I know you are not doing all of this for free and I believe that these will allow you to continue the revenue stream. If you do not begin action quickly, you faithful following will no longer be checking back here and all that you have begun will be lost.

Good luck to you, and to us all.

Well, I can't add to what others have said other than "ditto." Here is to hoping that enough posts will give craigslist a clue. I don't understand how your site abused anything (you were just consolidating & re-posting - hey kind of like google already does, but better ) and how pulling your site benefits them (reaching fewer people = less likely things will be sold/their site will be visited). Very puzzled.

Craigslist should smarten up and get with the programme... their lame-ass "search by single cities only" framework should have meant their complete and utter demise years, not to mention their lame-ass "design" which looks like somebody's mother did it in their kitchen in 1994. Will send them my own personal note of disdain in the hopes they smarten the F up.

I am very puzzled on how Craigslist can take such a strange and bad decision! The most logical decision would be to ask you (Jaxed) about a collaboration. With CL's rare ancient and bad search engine, I think they should be happy for your service!
Or could it be that Craigslist is planning a new search system?
I also believe that many of Jaxed's users would be interested to see and read the threatening letter you received from Craigslist ..
I am also convinced that many, along with me, are willing to stand behind you and give you the help and support we are able to.

This is just another example of how attorneys are making decisions that cause less productivity, create more headaches for us, and eliminates services that thousands relied on. I can easily reach Buffalo, Syracuse (and many other update NY cities listed separately on Craigslist), and often purchase things in those markets. Now I have to search each one individually – probably not going to happen - dumb decision by Craigslist.

What a bummer! I'm sure it is for you too as I would imagine your traffic will decrease because of this. At least you still can list the eBay ones as I see you are doing the eBay affiliate program and will still earn money if folks click on the ads shown here if they end up buying that item. So there is always a silver lining. However, it's still too bad about CL.

2nd time commenting and venting my frustration over this, but I can't quit thinking that the "terms of use," to which craigslist's C&D letter refers, are completely inapplicable. The limit of 100 listing links clearly refers to the POSTERS of those listings, who have a financial stake in their content - not to someone(s) who are simply browsing them as prospective buyers. Once those postings are in the public domain, we buyers should be able to search and view them by any means we chose. I hope Jaxed is going to seek some legal council and stuff the C&D order up Craiglist's a__, as suggested by many here. There's no way, in a logical and fair society, that their "request" makes sense or that they could prevail.

In the meantime, the whole fight would generate more publicity than Jaxed could ever buy. So hopefully that alone might be incentive for you to resist. (Of course, I encourage you with this while fully admitting that I'd rather you DIDN'T have more publicity and users - I considered Jaxed my secret weapon for finding treasures before others could.)

Also: I didn't know that ebay/pay pal had a stake in craigslist, until reading the comments above. But I should let you/them know this: In the last year and a half, I've bought 4 vintage bicycles through listings I found on Jaxed. In all but one case, I actually used Pay Pal to complete the transaction. For myself and for the seller, who have usually lived across the country from each other, it was simply the safest way to feel secure and not worry about being scammed. Jaxed and Pay Pal are NOT inherently at odds with each other.

Furthermore, in a long distance transaction, it is customary to direct someone to your ebay feedback rating, as a futher means of putting their mind at ease. Plus, it's not like I "never" found an ebay listing through jaxed, that I wouldn't have found otherwise. So ebay wasn't being hurt or marginalized by Jaxed, either. In fact, it was quite the opposite.

Talk about cutting your nose off to spite your face! These stupid lawyers are causing a quantifiable loss of revenue for all three entities: craigslist, ebay, and pay pal. I'll keep checking back from time to time, to see if you've decided to fight this and include the craigslist listings again, but I'm not going to be here on a daily basis like I had been. So unfortunate.

Good luck, Jaxed!

I'm an attorney and this looks pretty questionable from a legal point of view.
It might be worth checking around for an attorney who would look into this. It's unfortunately common for companies to send a groundless cease and desist letter assuming that the recipient will just fold up and walk away without ever checking into whether the letter has any merit.

From a business standpoint, it's clearly ebay's way of keeping craigslist from eating into its national/international market... Thanks ebay.

Sep 02, 2011 12:57:32 : Comment by: friendofjaxed
The terms of service are what you agree upon when you use the Craigslist service, since it is free and voluntary. They would not apply to a search engine since aggregating URL's that are public domain is exactly what search engines like Google, Yahoo, Bing, etc. do. If Jaxed is doing something illegal then so is every other search engine returning URL's based on internet search criteria. The internet would be almost useless without this type of search service. Jaxed should just go about it's business and realize that a hosting service can not apply it's "terms of use" to those who voluntarily use it's service to internet search providers.

When large corporations act in conjunction to restrain the market, even if not in direct collaboration, there is a actionable Anti-trust violation. Seems like jaXed would have a case if they can prove eBay and Craigslist are acting in this manner. All they need is $50 million and they could take them on. And probably win. Freedom on the web is an illusion. It is totally corporate and watched like a hawk by every 'law' enforcement organization. Which is really funny because while they are watching us China is stealing all of the latest technology our tax dollars paid for. LOL

"Local" is relative. I live in a region of the country where there is not an endless chain of interlinked cities like you have in the East Coast and much of the West Coast. So if you're just looking within a 50 mile radius, forget it, you won't find #$%. I spent the day working on a really cool old car I found almost two (big) states away on Jaxed. I went out there in a rental, put some money into a guy's pocket, and drove it back. One local (from the same region) guy doing business with another local. Thanks a bunch, Jaxed, you guys rock!

Can you not work it out with CL? Please!

Sep 04, 2011 02:13:23 : Comment by: Tilak Gurusingh
Boy, there is a lot of ignorant people out here writing about stuff they do not know. It is better for everyones sake to do some research work before some of you write some of these idiotic comments which are downright false that are posted here.

For exmaple Ebay does not own Craigs list. Period ! They are rivals duking it out with each other because ebay is trying to control CL with the minority 28 % shares they have in the company. A law suit was filed by Ebay when CL diluted the shares in order to make e bay less of a threat to their activities and e bay owned only 24 % of the shares after the dilution and they sued and got back the original 28 % of the shares they owned in the company befor the dilution. This law suit was settled in 2010, so there is no truth to the repeated comments made by some that e bay owns craigs list because even after the law suit they still own only 28 % of the shares in CL.

Here is the bottom line. in 2003 when CL shares were purchased by e bay, the parties entered into a amicable agreement that e bay will help CL to run local advertising and improve their local exposure. However ebay negated this agreement and did not help CL to do this but started its own local advertising as part of ebay and now have their own local listing services ( KIjiji ) both in USA and canada. This issue was also addresses in the lawsuit between e bay and CL. Ebay won the law suit and now have 28 % of the shares but do not have a controlling interest in CL. ( google e bay / craigs list law suit to read the outcome of the case )

Although not addressed in the law suit CL has to abide by the original agreement they had with e bay regarding local advertising and not transgress on areas not covered by the original agreement and this may be why cl put a stop to Jaxed taking them to a new level of national advertising which could have resulted in another law suit by ebay and Cl would have been liable for damages if it were proven they knew and aquiesced to this activity on the part of jaxed mash promoting local advertising in a way they clashed with ebays activities.

The question is why Jaxed is not coming out and informing everyone who is supporting them the actual contents of the sieze and desist order ? may be then we will not have to guess what is actually going on here between the parties. They say little learning is dangerous. So we should not take sides or start making adverse comments till we know the truth or find out what is really going on between CL and jaxed mash and where e bay is in all of this mess.

@Tilak Gurusingh

1) "Ebay does not own Craigs list. Period !"
Thats bs. If eBay has a 28% stake in CL, it means eBay own 28% of CL. to say ebay does not is bs.

2) "this may be why cl put a stop to Jaxed taking them to a new level of national advertising which could have resulted in another law suit by ebay"

another BS. JAXED is a separate company. CL does not own them so CL has NO CONTROL over JAXED. Whatever JAXED is doing is it own business. if ebay want to sue, then ebay only has to sue JAXED for making CL national advertising --> C&D the starting point.

I dont think the orig agreement btwn ebay/cl say that CL has to patrol the entire internet for any sites that pop up like what JAXED/CRAIGLOOK does. NO. CL ain't that stupid. This C&D has everything to do with CL and eBay.

Over the past 5 years I have bought over $50,000 in products ranging from business tools to cars, motorcycles, musical instruments, etc.... and have traveled up to 1500 miles to personally pick up the things I purchased that were advertised on Craigslist. There is no way I would have found those items with any search engine other than "jaxed". I have shared this info with my friends -- I can easily document an additional $50k+ that they purchased thru jaxed leads to craigslist. I hope that someone in Craigslist's legal staff reads this and can properly represent to Craigslist how poor a business decision this is on their part. Jaxed has been a GREAT service and practically in the real world takes absolutely nothing away from craigslist or ebay -- I hope my comments can be used to re-institute this great source.
Sincerely,
Greg Davall

Sad to see this. I've bought several motorcycles, musical instruments and even a painting from craigslist ads over the last three years. I would never have found these out of state ads without Jaxed.
I hope they will reconsider.

Well. So I will continue to support Jaxed then, and not Craigslist. If CL had it together, they would corroborate with you, not fight you. Corporate BS.

Thanks Jaxed for your site. I had been searching for the right cheap truck camper shell for a year using your site and finally found one a few days before your cease and desist. I hope the Jaxed Mash code is released and/or other clone sites go up...hope to see the work around soon!
thanks for your work!!

To search Craigslist sites nationally: just type "site:craigslist.org" after your search terms on Google. For instance, if you are looking for Chevelle SS's, in the google search box type the following: Chevelle SS site:craigslist.org

s everyone blind?????????? Jaxed has clearly been paid by Craigslist/Ebay to play along with this story. I mean really, going from exploitng the holes in a monopolistic system, to defending the same system??? Can anyone not smell bullshit? No anarchist fight? All of this has been scripted by Craigslist, it reeks of corporate wordsmithing. Give someone else the code and let them run with it? The simplicity of the solution is pain
fully obvious. Yet all I see here are weak sellout statements. Craigslist knows they couldn't shut you down or own your code, so they paid you out. WEAK!

@READ tHIS...I thought the exact same thing. Someone just made a whole bunch of money selling out to CL/Ebay. When CL/FLEAbay realized that they were losing viewership to JAXED, they bought them out. Now, these well written pro-CL updates (see "more on craigslist"), are in fact, just what they appear to be. Some wealky diguised intern sitting at the CL/Ebay office, with full control of the newly acquired JAXED site, and the bosses' direction to make CL look like good guys. GIVE ME A BREAK!

Sep 05, 2011 00:52:57 : Comment by: jaded
Yeah, isn't that every programmers dream? Make a website, get some traffic and then get bought out by your biggest competitor? Sounds like standard stuff to me. And, aat the same time, CL makes it seem like they played hardball, so the small fries back off. Saves them lmore. $ in buyouts down the road!!! I thought that was just a known tactic.....

Sep 05, 2011 01:26:14 : Comment by: Mr. Spock
The 3 above comments are interesting.

I still want to see that C&D, JAXED. If this a game JAXED play with CL/EBAY to trick your loyal users into deception, I for one am pissed. i hope that is not true.

Sep 05, 2011 01:57:14 : Comment by: friendofjaxed
The buyout does make sense. Jaxed management would have to know that a C&D would be totally bogus and unenforceable. But if that's true, it's like putting a spitball in a dike. Someone else, or many more mash-type sites will fill the void. That's the beauty of the internet; the total freedom of flow of information. Those who try to capitalize on it through a restriction in freedom of speech will always lose.

I agree that some items need to be searched on a national bassis. For example, I drove 1000 miles one way to purchase a Prindle 18-2 catamaran that I would not have found if not for Jaxed. I also purchased a G Cat catamaran that was 200 miles away which I also would not have found, but for Jaxed. Now I want to find a VW diesel car that I am willing to travel to purchase, however anyone listing on Craig's List will be limited to only their surrounding area for possible buyers. Looks to me like ebay is trying to force sellers to pay their ever increasing fees. I would like to see Jaxed create their own free Craig's list type posting site, I think it would be a great response to the C&D of Craigs list.

Since I'm sure CL Exec' types are watching, READ THIS:
CL was a good except your can't do an effective National search effectively for CL ad's the way JaXed Mash has allowed for the viewer content.
CL this makes you a P.O.S. in my book because you won't help your own client base be more accessible except for types like this most-excellent JaXed site.
You're a bunch of sue-happ J.O.'s in my book.

Nothing you do will change the mind of craigslist. They are essentially bullies and will stop every site on the net that does this sort of thing. I used to go to a website, but currently do not remember the name, that craigslist did the same. It was even better than this one. Someone should make a similar site to craigslist that allows that allows nationwide searches...give craigslist some competition!

Kijii is owned by e bay. E bay also owns 24% or 28% (depending on the court decision) of Craigslist. Craigslist offer 100% free listings. E bay charges an introduction fee, final value fee, etc. E bay tried to buy Craigslist. What would happen to Craigslist if it was owned by E bay? What would happen to all the users if the 3 main advertising services were owned by the same company (which happens to raise the price more and more often) Craigslist is trying to survive against a multi-million corporation. Stop bitching at Craigslist who gives you free service. Open your eyes before you open your mouth.

I agree with Dave... Jaxed can and should make up their own database.. Charge a penny a listing if you care to do so... No rules. Just a good search. At a penny a listing you will bury CL in short order. Don't forget to make rentals free... That will piss them off huge!

JimmyZ is right, if CL publishes their web pages as public domain on the internet, anyone has the right to search, summarize, and publish summarizations of public sites, e.g. Yahoo and Google. This is either one of the most frivolous and meritless C&D's ever issued by clueless attorneys, or jaxed got bought out to discontinue their service.

Are you still working to bring back "craigslist"? Do you know why they let "tempest" still to publish theirs adds? Because they put an info about the exact area where an add is published. You can do exactly the same into the last "jaxed's" column. For example : "craigslist copyright* SF bay area" In this situation its not gonna be a legal ground to send you a C&D in the future ! PS. Attorney's advice - free of charge ;)

I am restoring an antique auto; parts were already hard enough to find, but now this has taken my primary source for finding that "one in a million" part. I purchased the original vehicle that I found through an ad on Jaxed.com via an ad in the Miami Craigslist. Without this tool, 1. The seller may not have sold his car 2. I would never have found this vehicle. Everybody walks away happy! Also, I like the fact that Jaxed has a thumbnail per link, which seriously sped up searching time. It is a true shame for a "free" site to revoke privliges to a public forum.

GL has quire likely lost any right to claim any wrong based on a thing called usury where as another poster here has stated using jaxed to locate things for 5 years when it included CL's contents included in search results..

Hence proor to now CL has not complained...

From personal experience a real estate dispute over a private be was encroacged upon by a Foctor who stole a part of our residential communitiy private beach...

he built a retaining wall extending to out part of property..

members started to take it out her threatedned duit...

our group hired incompetent lawyer who advised us to leave wall alone and let court have time to take care of case...

and make ruling on issue...

thiout 3-4 years

then judge asked how long the wrongful wall had been allowed to exisr when he was told alost 4 years

his ruling was that the wal would sray the doctor had gained right to property de to lenghth use...

Also I like many others here Boight a vehicle whlile in another area and was willin to travel for the right one...

I was in California when my car insurance settlement hit for the 1978 Dodge Aspen wagon destroyed march of 2010...

in Febryart if 2011 I got the money fron the other parties insurance

I used jaxed to seek all Aspen & Vilare wagons with wood grained trim in Calif, Oregon, Nevada, Texas, Washington, Utah, Arizona, Montana, Colorado...amd Idaho

days time...

Finally I located right car.. coincidentally in Idaho my home state bit 425 miles north of Boise

I would not have found it without jaxed...

Also BRW I hd tracked nearly every one of these wood graiagons since the dare of the accident... thru jaxed

I talked with meny many owner of these cars uncluding one of 2 cars that the opposing insurance company tried to use to devalue my car down to a $550.00ce of junk LOL

Guess what it backfired on them when I saw the car they cired sold in PA for $1300.00 LOL

I was able to repy yeah I saw that car on CL thru a site mash search///

good pics of that very car LOL

It was green metallic amd om pme pf the rear frame rails it had a large rudted out hole in the 3/16" thick metal where a person could put their hand in!

I tole them Ha my frame had no rust holes in it and even the body had onlydlught surface rust too LOL

Hence my car was more valuable and

then I mentioned also that that seller needed the money so he sisn't hold out for more money on that car

Guess Whatdjusters supervisor was shoced I knew this about the car they pointed outand they caved in for $4000 on a car they only wanted to give $1600 for originally in 2010!

Is there anyone who would like to join me in a Class Action Lawsuit aginst CL for Damages based on destruction of a excellent net search tool

And CL's loss of Proprietary Rights based on usury law... they CL waited to long to complain!

BTW as an injured party I can acr Pro "Se and save litigation Fees/attorney fees thru representing myself

Sucks how the hell are we suppose to find the hard-to-find stuff. I bought lots of things in other states using Jaxed, it WAS awesome. A C&D doesn't mean squat, why you don't fight it is beyond comprehension. But if you're going to roll over and take it then you might as well shut this whole site down cause it is $hit now.
Guess I will be deleting Jaxed from my bookmarks now since it is useless.

I don't understand how it's not OK for jaXed Mash to list CL items, but it's OK for Google to do so. CL would be wise to look at jaXed as a compliment to their services rather than an obstruction. Maybe they're jealous because they hadn't thought of it, but they're looking really stupid now.

Maybe having the search performed on a separate site prevents CL from gathering info regarding search patterns to sell to advertisers. Everytime i post on CL im flooded with the same ads, im guessing from companies who pay cl for my address, so they must be selling the search data as well.

I guess we'll just have to look in the "ebay local" (kijiji) for cars...

Hmm, it's almost as if CL's controlling shareholder (ebay) WANTS you to abandon the free CL and use their pay site.

Ebay (CL) can not let you continue to assist people in using their free service if they can just bump those same people into popularizing their pay service.

I was surprise to see an order to cease and desist from craigslist to jaxed.com.
I hope you do realize that jaxed is a very useful tool. Craigslist limits searches for items to local or selected areas, but unable to provide a nationwide search on a single click.
Just wanted to share my disappointment with craigslist action.

Sep 22, 2011 11:50:47 : Comment by: Luis
Jaxed.com should advertise their services nationwide. I get the feeling that Craigslist looked at Jaxed as a future threat to their services. My guess, Craigslist will copy national services and come up with something of their own. Once the legs has been cut from under Jaxed!!

Sep 22, 2011 13:29:31 : Comment by: jay
Sorely disappointed to see the loss of this service.

The consolidated Craigslist listings on Jaxed was a tool many here including myself enjoyed.

I can't help but believe the omissions of the Craigslist listings at Jaxed will not only be a loss to Jaxed but will likewise result in some reduction in the use of Craigslist.

Perhaps Craigslist seeks to recover any potential loss by having those interested in buying and selling nationwide rely on Ebay.

Nonetheless, just a shame to loose the service Jaxed was providing!

This is bad news, I have purchased many items using Jaxed from the craigslist ads,, Craigslist owners have a great idea and their logic seems skewed. You can just type in whatever you want in google and find most craigslist posts anyway

such as " Dodge Viper Craigslist " into google.. that finds a great deal of the listings anyway.

I hope both companies stay financially sound through what seems to be a mud-throwing match

Now Barn, we both know there are a lot of Goofballs that post comments on line, and while most of them mean well, the fact is they are weak and find comfort in complaining with other folk who are also weak.
Now do you remember when Guber wanted to buy that Plymouth Barracuda, just so folks would stop making fun of him for having no education, no job, and no girlfriends? Recall how we talked about low self-esteem and how guys end up addicted to CraigsList. It starts off looking for Cars, or Tools, or Yard Sales, then Girls, but it usually ends up just contributing to their frustration. And the majority of these men (who have no employment ) well...they end up in day time homosexual group activities. They may well meet to check out a ol' 69 Ford Mustang in a musty garage or storage shed. But we both know they end up exchanging more than phone numbers in that encounter. So be careful swapping cheap used stuff is not what it used to be.

A lawyer drawn cease and desist is not the same thing as a court order. It's merely a request accompanied by threat of legal action. Threat of legal action is merely that, a threat. Seek your own legal advice. It is unlikely that a judge would rule in favor of Cl.
Or, share the code for Jaxed, let 10,000 other sites pop up offering the same mash.. They can't run around and threaten everybody.. The bottom line is that Cl has no right to monopolize interstate commerce. Blow the doors off the establishment!

I like all of them, ebay, craigslist and of course jaxed. In a conversation with a local attorney who specializes in internet crimes he mentioned that the reason jaxed probably got a C&D letter was due to the service jaxed provvied, of which then people who flag craigslist ads were causing rampant flagging of craigslist ads when they see same item listed repeatedly in various markets. So some one who didn't like the item, or could not afford it, or competitor simply flagged them all. And craigslist got tired of hearing complaints. And those posting ads got tired of the trolls who flag anything on craigslist they didn't agree with. Makes sense, but I asked him about scammers using craigslist, you know the ones who write script in their ads for $4200 2011 Toyota and scam gmail account, seems jaxed provided a great service TO craigslist by showing all those scam ads, and then others flagging out those phishing ads before scammers had chance to defraud someone. He didn't have a answer for that but said craigslist is not policed either. I guess that is how you end up with all the armed robberies and rapes associated to a self policing site like craigslist. Was interesting convrsation in the pub over a cold swill. Hang in there Jaxed, you have 100X more fans than what your facebook likes shows!

I didn't read all the comments to see if someone mentioned that craigslist's action is all about Ebay's $. One of craigslist's largest investors is EBAY. Ebay's investment was made to limit the impact of FREE craigslist listings on their business model. People were migrating their ebay listings to craigslist becuase of all the eyeballs that they could get from sites like jaXed Mash. So lawers were dispatched to close these sites down. Remember it's all about EBAY's profits! And you can take that to the bank!

Was disappointed at the cease and desist action taken by Craigslist to end the practice.

Perhaps you are aware already but, if not, I wanted to bring to your attention that another site-

claiming to have no association with Craigslist-is offering the same service that use to be offered by Jaxed.

This company has stated that it was also served a cease and desist order from Craigslist

but have assessed their risk and chosen to continue the practice.

Only time will tell if defying the order was a wise decision.

I understand the rationale for buying local, and how we all need to be very careful of scams. But, something does not have to be next door for us to go get something we want! And using good judgement can reduce our risk. We have to assume an element of risk in anything we do.
Sad.

It's ironic that Craigslist is so against SOPA & PIPA, yet over the past year or so has relentlessly pursued websites like jaxed with these C&D orders. Hypocrite much?

I agree. CL is very hypocritical.

So how does Craiggers get away with it?

I was here to say the say thing. They stop their page for a day to make the point that content should be free and available, yet not long ago they did just the opposite to scrimper. I guess whatever works to their advantage for that day. Makes me really question their integrity. Now, google, I have always and continue to be a fan, mostly because they have remained true to their philosophy and roots. I'll probably always support them, but c'mon craigslist. Set a better example if you want people's support.

I am shocked that Craigslist would be offended. they do not offer the service you do yet they cry about it. did you send over a block of cheese to go with their wine????

Craig's List will be the loser. Why can't we just forget CL and post to this site if we want to sell. I will never use CL as they don't know how to make it easily accessible and I can't find anything on it.

must be a deeper reason that CL went after jaxed. [Linky to: www.searchtempest.com] still works fine. Maybe it's because it throws in the eBay listings too if you want and that's CL's parent company

I bought a $1 app for my iphone and ipad. it's called CRAIGSLIST. I enter all the cities or states i want to search and BAM, my results in a second. I have no problem paying such a small amount for such a great service.

Jaxed,
This C&D letter is being sent becuase we at craigslist want to someday sell the site and get rich like that kid w/ facebook. In order to do that we need peopled to come to our search page not yours. You took a nice product and made a better interface however, it reduces the ultimate marketable value of our site so you got to go. Thats the free market at work - we are free to limit you from our market. Craigslist was our idea and we have a right to get rich on it.

No hard feelings....

Search all of craigslist , or search by State, City, Category. You can also search Backpage, Kijiji, eBay and Amazon through this search check tool.
