Pidgin Chat Logs and Google Desktop |

I have found that I can not live without Google Desktop at work. Having the ability to search all e-mails, text files, word documents by hitting CTRL-CTRL is da bomb. The problem I had was that I could not get Google Desktop to index my Pidgin IM chat logs. I did find a few unsupported plugins for Google Desktop to accomplish this task, but couldn't get either one installed and/or working.
The problem, I think, is that Pidgin hides the chat logs away in a directory that Google Desktop ignores. In my case, something like: C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\.purple\logs; I tried to add this directory to Google Desktop as one to explicitly index, but it didn't seem to work - even after claiming the directory crawl was "up-to-date".
My solution was to map a drive letter to the directory I wanted Google Desktop to index, and then explicitly tell Google Desktop about that drive. In Windows, I ran this command:
SUBST L: "C:\Documents and Settings\[user]\Application Data\.purple\logs"
Now, drive L: points to this directory. Google Desktop indexes drive L:. I can search my Pidgin chat logs with Google Desktop. All is happy in the world.
